Lonely Traveler?

August 27, 2008 11:45pm Home Time 8:45pm LA time

So the last two posts (combined into one) were written at BWI before boarding the plane. I am now in LAX waiting, yet again, to board. It’s 11:05pm home time and 8:00pm here. I leave in 2 hrs and 40min!! Wow!!! So traveling alone really isn’t all that bad. Again, it probably helps that I have gone this route before.
Two things I’ve noticed about raveling alone:
*You meet a lot of people if you allow yourself to
*You don’t have to worry about holding anyone else up
However – it is nice to have a traveling buddy.

The flight went fine. Ended up sitting with a 60yr old woman headed out to visit her grandkids and a 30 something year old guy born in El Salvador but moved here when he was 13. They were both quite talkative and very interesting, which was nice at first but kind of exhausting after six hours! It was good though – I didn’t even have to bust out my Narnia books on CD, which I was totally prepared and almost looking forward to listening to– oh well.

Didn’t realize my flight had a stop in Phoenix but it was quickish – I did get out and go to the bathroom and gave some of the Southwest staff a laugh when I heelied down the gate thing back to the plane. Southwest staff are so nice!

Soooo glad I brought the heeleys! I really debated over that but knew I would probably regret it if I didn’t bring them. They were quite fun once I got to LAX. A nice guy from my flight grabbed me a cart so I piled my 100+lbs of luggage on their and pushed / heelied it from terminal 1, past the international terminal, to terminal 6, where I sat on a bench and had dinner (the rest of my sandwich and apples . . .) I was sitting outside some Mexican airline and there was absolutely no one inside so I went in, shuffled my luggage and used their scales to make sure everything was the right weight.

Heelied back to the international terminal (btwn 3 and 4) where I checked in . . .
So the 7 hours hasn’t been too bad – def took advantage of that time to be outside and stretch the legs!!!

Think I’m gonna head to the bathroom to freshen up and maybe even change my shirt before the looooonnngggg flight. Gosh I hope I have an aisle seat – dahhh. I had an aisle on the flight here and it was still sooo long. Why does Australia have to be on the other side of the world???

Okay, I guess that is all for now. Not sure when I will be able to post next.
Oh, Granny – they couldn’t exchange that Australian $ here so it may just be a collector’s item! I’ll check once I get over there too.

Darn formatting - this isn't looking how I want it to - oh well

So this pic is actually from last time, after arriving in AU but you get the idea :)

Are We There Yet???

Well, I’ve been at the airport about an hour now and I’m already finding myself antsy :-P Check in went okay after shuffling 3lbs out of my largest bag and squeezing it into my smaller one to meet the South West’s 50lb limit. Qantas allows 70lbs but only 15 for the carryon, where as Southwest has no carryon limit. So one of my carryon bags is 20lbs and the other is 25! I will have plenty of time to shuffle in LAX during my 5+ hours there!

In the two minutes that I was sitting still at the gate I found myself thinking about the time we were going on the cruise for grandma and granddad’s 50th anniversary. I was about 13 years old and it was my first time flying (besides when I flew as a baby out to WA state). As we checked our bags we realized we had forgotten our birth certificates, which we needed to get on the cruise so Dad headed home (about 20min from the airport) to get them. I can remember sitting in the Cinna-bon at the airport with Mom, Ellen, and maybe Grandma and being so worried that Dad was not going to make it back in time. Well, as this was some time ago I don’t remember all the details but he did make it back in time!

Unlike that day, I’ve felt pretty relaxed so far! I think having flown this course before helps! Although, I did try to get on a flight to Tennessee – oppss. . . . I thought they were boarding early for a 12:55 flight! “Yes, Laura, more than ONE flight leaves from YOUR gate everyday – lol”

So I’m Just killing time now; eating the lunch mom packed at the nice counter thing that Southwest has in their waiting area. It even has outlets and USB outlets to charge your ipods and mp3 players – wow!
I think all my math is right! Dad? Allison? Marian?
Wow! Can’t believe I’m actually on my way!

In an airport you can’t help but wonder where people are going and why; so fascinating! What is you Final Destination?
Sounds like a book title – “You Final Destination” or just “Final Destination” “The Final Destination”? huh – it probably already is a book – soo many books out there. Okay, about to board the plane.
